Recently refurbished by Heritage Lottery Funding to a high standard, the Welfare Park is the village's most popular attraction. The park hosts a number of activities throughout the year and has a summer schedule for children throughout the summer holidays, details of these are posted on this website and in the park's noticeboards once finalised. The park has been recognised for its management and maintenance and has been awarded the Green Flag Award and also the Green Heritage Site Award in recognition of the park's historical features and the heritage of the sporting clubs which use the park. The park features a toddler and junior play area, a sculpture, football field, rugby field, cricket field, bowling greens, bandstand, multi-sports pitch and the Green Leaf Cafe. Also housed within the park is Horden Heritage Centre, situated in the upper rooms of the Green Leaf Cafe. The Heritage Centre houses memorabilia which looks back over 100 years of Horden history, including mining memorabilia, old photographs of Horden and the villagers, Horden heritage, local memories. The Heritage Centre's opening times are Thursdays 10am - 12 noon. Special appointments for opening can be made by contacting Councillor Billy Hill on: 0191 5869909. All schools are very welcome.
